New Community Office Manager Hails From U. K.
BLOOMINGDALE COVE RESIDENT

Derry Wilson, Bloomingdale’s new community office manager, doesn’t skip a beat when asked why she moved from London, England to Bloomingdale, USA in 2003.
“I came to the U. S. to be with my husband, Herb, so he could play golf every day!” Wilson said.
The Wilson’s moved to Bloomingdale Cove about three years ago, when Herb -- a retired U. S. Air Force Chief Master Sergeant -- took a civilian job at MacDill.
“Herb just loved the area and had some friends here already,” Wilson said.
“I came to the U. S. to be with him while he was in the process of moving to Florida. We were married in November 2003 on the beach, at sunset, in Sarasota.”
The Wilsons have six grown sons between them. Three live in Maine, one in Thailand and two in England. The combined families share four grandchildren.
Wilson most recently worked in social housing in London.
“Social housing is given to people who can’t afford or aren’t otherwise able to maintain a tenancy themselves or buy a property,”
“I dealt with people who had drug and alcohol addictions, mental health issues, single parent families and the elderly; anyone whom for some reason needed help with housing. I helped them maintain their tenancies, pay their rent -- and take court action on those who wouldn't or couldn't.”
Wilson has a British BA degree in Honors Community Management and is qualified to teach English as a second language.
The Wilsons are members of From The Heart Ministries in Brandon. They also run their own DJ business – Oldgold24kt.
“Herb is a terrific DJ,” Wilson said.
“He plays all the old stuff and brings back all those memories. He did it for 27 years while in the military and is trying to build the business up again here.”
In her spare time, Wilson tutors English as a second language to adults and children. She and Herb also play golf. Lots and lots of golf, she said.
“Herb has a group of buddies that meet to play a few times a week.”
“I didn’t learn to golf until about 18 months ago, and I have a very high handicap.”
“If any ladies would like to join me occasionally, I’d love to hear from them.”
Contact Wilson at 813-681-2051 or e-mail bloomingdale.homeowners@verizon.net.

- School For Students With Learning Disabilities Moves To Bloomingdale

Laurie Spiegel and her father, Bill Beers, prepare to move their 3-year-old private school to its new location on Bloomingdale Avenue to serve more students with learning disabilities.

There are just a few questions each parent should ask of his or her child to determine if the child might need the assistance of the Interactive Education Academy, said Bill Beers, chief executive officer of the Brandon-based school.
Does your child struggle in school?
Does he or she have a learning disability?
Does it feel like you have nowhere left to turn to help your student?
The fact that so many parents have answered yes to these questions is the reason the Interactive Education Academy is moving from an office park on Oakfield Drive into a larger, custom-built facility on Bloomingdale Avenue.
More and more parents, he said, are looking for ways to empower their children and help them overcome obstacles and reach their full learning potential.
Formerly known as the Dyslexia Institutes of America, Beers’ full-service private school specializing in programs for students with learning disabilities opened in Brandon in 2003. During its three years in operation, it has served hundreds of students with reading and other learning challenges, Beers said.
“We began as a therapy clinic for students with dyslexia, but we now serve much more than dyslexia,” said Beers.
The school was the brainchild of Beers’ daughter, Laurie Spiegel, president of the school, who wanted to start her own therapy clinic. Beers, who spent his career with Hewlett Packard and IBM, saw it as an opportunity to leave the corporate world for a slower, less competitive pace and a chance to impact young lives.
The demand for Spiegel’s one-on-one teaching style has led to the opening of another school in New Port Richey and the need for a larger school in Brandon.
Next month, Beers, Spiegel and their staff of about 15 will relocate to 1470 Bloomingdale Ave. in Valrico, next to Bloomingdale High School. The current school can accommodate 60 students. The new school designed by McCullough & Scott will be able to hold approximately 70 students from grades kindergarten through 12.
“The Bloomingdale building will serve as a good central point for our existing students,” Beers said. “Plus the new building will allow us to design it the way we want.”
Students come from as far away as Lakeland and Wesley Chapel every day, he said.
The center will feature moveable walls to create smaller classrooms, which now have between 10 and 12 students per teacher, and a media center. The building will offer 1,000 square feet more space, totaling 4,000.
Beers said the move also will allow him the chance to begin an online arm of education. IEN will be using coursework provided by Learning By Grace Inc. to offer more than 140 courses including electives such as Christian living, guitar and Web design, providing additional offerings for the growing home-schooled population.
The classes have daily lessons, grading, interactive message boards and are taught by certified teachers, Beers said.
The online school will deliver Christian-based curriculum for kindergarten through 12th-grade students.
“I’m a big believer in freedom of educational choice,” he said. “We’ll be able to reach more families through Christian education. Students may not be believers, but it puts them closer to understanding the gospel.”
The online enterprise will be geared toward students in Florida, Georgia, Texas and Alabama, he said, because those are the states that are home-school friendly.
Beers said he believes every child is unique and it’s simply a matter of finding the best method for him or her to learn. This means parents and teachers need to take an active role in a child’s education.
From the moment they arrive at his school, he said children are made to feel welcome, parents are updated about the student’s work and the children get a few minutes of face-to-face time.
School tuition runs about $8,500 a year. However, the school meets the criteria for the McKay Scholarship Program and students may be eligible for the McKay scholarship to attend. The McKay scholarship is available to students with dyslexia, attention deficit disorder and a host of other learning disabilities who haven’t been able to succeed in the public school system. Spiegel currently sits on the McKay Coalition.
Parents, whose children have spent years struggling in public schools, give the academy high marks.
Among them is Brandon architect Miller Dowdy whose 12-year-old son, Quinn, attends the academy. Dowdy, a Brandon architect, said public school wasn’t working for Quinn and discovered the academy through word of mouth.
“It’s working great for my son. He gets one-on-one interaction. They go over your child’s record and tell you how they are going to work with each student over the course of the year,” Dowdy said.
The school creates an action plan, addressing each child’s educational issues on a daily basis, and the staff takes the time to understand every student’s needs, Dowdy said.
Quinn Dowdy has attended the school for two years, but has improved so much that he will return to public school next year.
“Quinn has gone through such a remarkable change that he’s assimilated back to middle school. They work with a student on their time and pay them extra-special attention,” Dowdy said.
Even if a student does go back to public school, he or she can return to the academy for private tutoring. The school also offers classes for adults.
A dedication ceremony for the new facility is planned for July 29. The school terms begins Aug. 7.
Enrollment is now open.
Call: 689-2087 or go to www.interactiveeducationacademyorg for information about the school and the McKay Scholarship.
